What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent replacement for your own teeth.

These are crafted from titanium and are inserted into the bone for maximum rigidity: they will feel just as strong and robust as the real thing. Dental implants are designed to resemble natural teeth, combining a root fitted into the jawbone and a crown.

While fitting dental implants is more complicated and time-consuming than simply using dentures, implants are a superior option.

Why? Because They Are:

  • As easy to clean as natural teeth, leading to better oral hygiene than dentures
  • Unable to slip or adjust while eating or talking, unlike standard dentures
  • Resilient enough to last for up to 25 years
  • An effective way to prevent jawbones shrinking and causing premature ageing

Are you a Good Candidate for Implants?

The majority of people are suitable candidates for dental implants, and there’s a high chance you will be too.

You will:

  • have healthy gums
  • maintain good general oral hygiene
  • be old enough for your jawbone to have stopped developing

At GENERIC DENTISTS, our experienced dentists will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth, jaw and mouth to ensure dental implants are a suitable option for you. We will take an X-ray of your mouth to assess any bone loss or areas of concern before proceeding.

The preparation stage incorporates Tomogram technology too: this innovative imaging system affords us the visuals we need to plan the proper placement of each implant.

You may NOT be a viable candidate if you:

  • smoke
  • have uncontrolled gum disease
  • have a history of alcohol abuse
  • take medications which suppress the immune system
  • have bad dental habits, such as grinding your teeth

Dental implants tend to have a high success rate and most patients are extremely satisfied with their new teeth. We’re dedicated to achieving outstanding results every single time, transforming your entire mouth with only the most professional work.

We believe in full transparency: if we believe dental implants may not be in your best interests, we’ll tell you. It’s that simple.

What does the Dental Implant Process Involve?

We will create the root of your implant by inserting a titanium screw into your jawbone. This part of the process ends when we’re satisfied that the titanium is fully secured to the bone.

Once the healing process is finished, we secure the crown to each implant using a dental post, to achieve an authentic finish. This is performed for each tooth to be replaced.

The entire process demands great care, precision and expertise. Every implant must be fitted into the proper position and stay rooted, to prevent any displacement in the future. You should be able to chew foods without fear of your new teeth coming unstuck.

We know just how troubling dental work can be, but we aim to make you feel relaxed, reassured and comfortable when under our care. GENERIC DENTISTS invests in cutting-edge tools and technology for your complete peace of mind.

How Long Does the Dental Implants Fitting Take?

Installing dental implants into the jawbone typically takes no longer than one hour, though this varies depending on the amount required, their placement and the condition of your gums / jaw.

We will be able to provide you with a more accurate estimation after we have performed a thorough assessment.

Is Dental Implant Treatment Painful?

If you’re concerned that having dental implants fitted will be painful, you’re not alone: a number of our patients feel anxious when they first contact us, but there’s no reason to be afraid.

Fear of the procedure is typically far, far worse than any physical discomfort you may actually feel. GENERIC DENTISTS offers a number of sedative options to help you remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment.

Please don’t let nerves prevent you having dental implants fitted — contact our specialists to learn more about the techniques we use to keep the process as simple as we can.

How Long is the Healing Stage?

Your dental implants will fuse to your jawbone fully within two to nine months of your treatment.

Allowing them to heal properly is essential to ensure the titanium secures as required and stays in place for the foreseeable future. Your dental crowns will be attached to the implants once your healing is complete.

We will be available to offer support and assess your implants’ progress following the procedure.

Is there a Chance the Implants will Fail to Fuse Securely?

There is a very slight risk that one or more dental implants may fail to fuse to the jawbone as expected. This is extremely rare and does not mean you will be unable to enjoy the benefits of the treatment at a later date.

Implants can struggle to fuse properly if fibrous tissue builds up around them, or you develop an infection.

Whatever the cause, we will evaluate the situation and remove the problematic implant(s) as soon as we can. The site affected will require time to heal, but we will attempt to place a second dental implant at the first opportunity.

Are there any Risks I Should Consider?

The vast majority of people will experience no negative effects after having dental implants fitted.

However, in rare cases certain patients may find their implants fail to fuse or cause health complications. Anyone with carcinoma or diabetes could be required to undergo additional treatments before we insert your implants.

This is a complex area, but we will happily discuss your circumstances and candidacy if you have questions.

Can I Still Have Dental Implants if My Jawbone is Unable to Support Them?

Some patients may be affected by a deteriorated jawbone and worry they’re unable to undergo dental implant treatment.

While it’s an understandable concern, there are options to consider. One is titled implants, in which the titanium roots are inserted at an angle.

Another is bone augmentation: those who have lost much of their jawbone’s volume can have it widened through a procedure. This involves grafting bone or a similar material to the jaw, enabling dental implants to be fitted at a later date.

Any patients relying on bone augmentation will have an extra four to nine months added to the entire process, while the bones fuse.

How can you Prepare for your Dental Implant Treatment?

Proper preparation for your dental implants is crucial. An in-depth evaluation must be performed to check your jawbone is strong enough to support the implants, and to confirm you are a suitable candidate overall.

GENERIC DENTISTS will discuss the process in detail during your consultation, to ensure you understand exactly what it involves and how you’ll benefit. X-rays and other types of tests are incredibly important, and can help identify potential problems in good time.

A treatment plan will be prepared for you. This is based on the number of teeth to be replaced, your jawbone’s current condition, any health issues liable to affect the treatment and more.

Make sure you inform us of any medical conditions, health complaints and medications you take, even those bought on an over-the-counter basis. Likewise, tell us if you have ever had any form of allergic reaction to anaesthesia — this is vital to avoid possible risks when sedation is used.
